It all Started in 1948, when Oscar’s Steakhouse opened its doors on Old St. Louis Rd. Oscar distinguished himself with juicy, flavorful steaks that “hung off your plate” all hand cut from full sides of beef that aged in the cellar. Oscar’s Steak Sandwich and his sirloin for Two were famous standouts, and still big sellers in today’s Oscar’s Classic Diner incarnation. He was equally noted for his hearty breakfasts and home-style favorites. Oscar’sSteakhouse was to become a great success, but Oscar never quit managing his cash only business from a cigar box.
Starting as a local favorite, they outgrew their small stone building by the mid fifties, and built a more expansive establishment on Hwy 54. It eventually drew customers from all over Missouri as a popular stop to and from the Lake, and their reputation spread beyond state borders. Oscar’s even hosted Harry S Truman on private occasion.
Son. Robert “Fuzzy” Mankin, also loved to cook and expertly operated the kitchen for the later part of their 23 year operation. And although he did not choose to settle down as an owner when Oscar retired in the early 70s, his young son Kurt had become inspired by this heritage and enamored with his own Oscar’s dream…
Oscar L Mankin was born 1909, into a large family with a love of cooking. Six of the eight siblings translated this passion into successful restaurants in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Each had his own specialty including Earnie’s Manifold Meatloaf served at the long running Wagon Wheel in Enid OK. It could actually be cooked on an engine manifold! May’s Yeast rolls were also in great demand at her place nearby in Oklahoma.
And Here in Jefferson City Earl was popular for this tasty barbecue and deliciously unique pork loin. It was roasted with a secret-recipe peanut butter baste, at the Missouri Blvd drive-in bearing his name. This was during the days when his sparse neighbors on the now congested thoroughfare, included the honkey-tonk “Hillbilly Village” and brother. Clarence’s stave mill across the road.
After serving in the war and few years saving capital, Oscar and wife Lena Mae continued this notable tradition with the opening of Oscars steakhouse on the east side. Their sons Jack and Fuzzy also mastered the craft and joined the popular business to continue this legacy. Jack and wife Joyce, further expanded to create the popular J-J barbecue restaurant and grandson Kurt has carried forward their skill and tradition into the present day with the award-winning menu at Oscar’s Classic Diner.
After Years of planning, Kurt and Fuzzy teamed up to realize this vision in March of 2004 opening the new Oscar’s Classic Diner. Our wish is that the spirit of Oscar’s Steakhouse is brought back to you with our selection of juicy hand-cut steaks and home-style comfort foods prepared as Oscar did. Our main mission has been to bring you the high quality of ingredients and homemade preparation that made the original Oscar’s a beloved favorite.

The kids will also enjoy the Purple-People-Eater breakfast platter, a Little Ritchie burger, or many other child favorites from the kids menu – and you can be get their milk and veggies if desired.
Sadly, Fuzzy passed away in 2006 but his exuberant spirit remains. Additionally his mastery in the kitchen is carried on though ur dedicated staff of accomplished chefs. They’ve earned Oscar’s several breakfast and home-style cooking awards. We believe you’ll find something delicious to satisfy everyone’s palate. and our exceptional servers will always strive to make you feel right at home with their friendly, attentive care.
